Storyteller

Helen Womack

Journalist/Writer

Helen is our interviewer and writer. She had a long and distinguished career as a correspondent in Moscow, for British and Australian newspapers. Since moving to Budapest in 2015, she has helped to tell the stories of refugees for UNHCR and worked as a communications consultant to UN Global Pulse, the Secretary-General's Innovation Lab. She has also trained journalists.

Helen always writes with love. She loves words and their proper use. She finds fresh alternatives to clichés and simple ways of saying things, without jargon.

Elegant in her own writing, Helen edits the work of others with respect. Above all, she connects sensitively to the people whose stories she is telling. She knows it is a privilege when someone trusts their story to her.

Storyteller

Dan Swartz

Media and Communications Director

Dan is our manager. He has all the skills of a modern Communications team leader. Born in the US, he studied international relations, history and Chinese at university but after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, he chose not to work in China. Instead, he came to Hungary in 1990 and learnt Hungarian well enough to pass the citizenship exam.

Dan has over 30 years’ experience in media and communications, campaigning and international project management for many of the world’s top human rights, environmental and cultural diplomacy organisations. These include the UN International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Helsinki Committee, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and European Capital of Culture.

Dan advocates positive solutions – working for and not against something, and treating the causes of problems rather than the symptoms. He believes positive change is possible and is committed to that goal.

Storyteller

Balázs Horváth

Filmmaker / Visual designer

Balázs is responsible for our visual content. Behind the camera, he is very creative and he has strong social and environmental credentials as well.

Straight after graduating in photography and motion picture culture, he became an environmental activist and attorney for the ZÖFI - Green Youth Association. In parallel, he worked as a graphic designer, mainly for green organisations.

From 2007-2018, he was an editor-reporter at index.hu, Hungary's largest online medium, producing over 400 reports and portrait films, mainly on cultural and social topics.

Balázs has worked on numerous documentary films in different positions (reporter, cameraman, editor). In 2017, he directed Days on Designers, a full-length documentary that was distributed all round Hungary and screened at international film festivals.

As a freelance videographer, Balázs has been in demand from major organisations including UNHCR Central Europe, Amnesty International, Reuters, the Chello Foundation and 444.hu.
